Quick survey: What are your goals for 2012?

Dr Gary

HI!

I was thinking about the new year and what I am hoping to accomplish in my life. Notice that I am saying "goals" and not "resolutions."

Resolutions always make me feel like I am setting myself up for failure, promising to do or not do something that may not be realistic, like going to the gym four times a week. A great idea but not realistic. Somehow, resolutions often end up getting pushed aside, and replace by guilt and self-criticism. Like an unrealistic promise that will most likely be broken. Why set myself up?

Goals, on the other hand, sound more doable. My goals end up being more realistic. I think of a goal as something I am working toward, based on a practical plan. I'm serious about my goals, but I also know that I am not in control of everything, and that my goals may need to be modified during the course of the years. Or my priorities may change.

Some of my goals include taking better care of myself, beginning with not constantly over-scheduling myself. Being a better friend, beginning with making more time for friends. And yes, getting more exercise, staying on top of my diet. Not to mention remembering to be patient with myself so that I can be patient with others. Spending more time on the discussion boards with all of you.

Self-care is definitely at the top of my goals this year. If I don't take good care of myself, the other goals are a lot less likely to be met.

What about you? What's at the top of the list for your goals this year?

Like you, I am planning on taking better care of myself. I have already lost 10 pounds this year. I do plan on riding my bike more and to my volunteer job. I also want to try and complete more of my projects, a lofty goal for an ADHDer.

I think we should check our progress around the 6 month mark.

I like your goal and it does sound better then resolutions. You made me really think and I'm going to work harder on not isolating myself so I guess I'm also going to work on myself.

    Hey!

Great to hear from you! Hope all is well.

Not isolating yourself is a great goal to have. Shine your light upon the world!

My goals go along w/you Dr Gary to take care of myself better. And it starts with the surgery in 2 weeks. Cause if I don't take care of me 1st how can I take care of anything or anyone else? We talked about being patient w/ourselves once before & that continues to hold for me. One of the things that is hardest to be patient about w/ourselves is losing weight. Not just losing it but more so how fast we lose it. I gained some of what I lost while recovering from the original surgery. But I also knew that it had a lot to do w/ the amount of prednisone I ended up taking. Now that I'm back down to 5mgs daily I've been able to loose weight a little easier & quicker.

Now lets talk about something that is, I believe, NOT doable. And that is the over use of the word "able". You know what I mean? Lunch is do"able". LOL I'm not mocking you or anyone else. But "able " gets thrown at the end of so many words now-a-days. It's getting annoying. The last 2 winters we've had an exceptionally large amount of snow for my area. Last winter the media in my area of the country started refering to the snow amounts we were going to get as "plowable" . "We're only going to get a couple inches, Dave. Nothing 'plowable'." "Here we go again, Dave. This snow will definately be 'plowable'." Another one for the snow is "sledable". "We're going to get 6-8 inches, Dave. Surely the kids will be glad to hear it will be 'sledable'. " It's driving me nuts! :) lol

    Hi squog,

Great to run into you, as always.

I believe that if people took better care of themselves, then the world would be a better place. There would be less resentment, more frustration tolerance, healthier people. More patience for ourselves and for others.

I am definitely inclined to agree with you on the "doable" thing. When catchy phrases turn into cliches, they are just that.

I hope you are doing okay as you gear up for that surgery!
