I'm a 57 yr old great grandma. I've lived with cronic pain now for over 25 yrs now. But the past 2 1/2 yrs have been absolute hell.
My husbands work decided to get the lousyest medical insurance. It wasn't worth the paper that it was wrote on. So my husband dropped our ins.
I have RA, Severe Fibro, severe back problems and ect.
Well my Dr treated me for about 6 months after we dumped the med ins.
I was on quite a few differant meds. Including some heavy pain meds. But I called in one month to have my meds refilled only to find out that the Dr. Fired me because of not having any medical insurance.
Well its now been over 2 1/2 years since then. I've had no medication for my bp, chol, ra , Fibro or any of my medical problems.
I've tried to keep my bp and chol in control with vitamins. But nothing makes my pain to go away.
I babysit for my first great granddaughter who is 6 months old now. It takes everything that I've got to even get out of bed. Let alone to take care of a baby. I don't go anywhere any more because just walking a little is like running a marathon for me. I just can't do it anymore.
My husband is a over the road truck driver. I only see him maybe 1 day a week. I have 2 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild that live with me.
My husband changed employers and we are just now starting to get all of the info for our new medical insurance.
I'm lost on what to do in getting a new Dr. I've not seen one in such a very long time. Lol.
But i'll you something when you are at your lowest you don't give up. No matter what you have to do. Just to get out of bed I want to scream because my pain is so bad. But I don't give up. But at other times i've just thought. Why ???
But now I can finially see a Dr again. Hopefully he can bring my pain under control. At least I pray that he can.

I give you a lot of credit for being as strong as you are, I to suffer from the same illnesses as you, sometimes the RA is the worst sometimes its the fibro, I am disabled now because I am just about bed ridden, I had my first granddaughter in Aug 2010 & my 70yr old mom is babysitting her because I can't get up my sons stairs or chase after her. I can't believe your dr discharged you because of no ins. When I got fired & lost my ins all of my dr's sat down with me & we worked out a schedule so I didn't see them as often so paying cash wasn't so hard, also I don't know if there is a BJ's food warehouse by you but they have a discount RX card it costs nothing to join & you do save a percentage on your meds. You don't have to get them filled at BJ's most of my local pharmacy's accepted the card. I have plenty of applications if you want one I'd be happy to send one to you. Stay strong & I wish you well please keep in touch, its good to talk to someone who feels the same way you do. Peace, Marydoodle

No there's no BJs near us.
All I can tell you to do is don't give up. You have to keep moving. I know , its easier said than done. But I've had all of my medical problems for quite some time. Yes there is times that I just want to go into a wheelchair. But then I take that as giving up on myself.
I should also be useing a cane to walk around because of my back suitation. The Dr had told me to not go without useing it. But the truth is I don't have enough hands. Lol
But I guess a lot of what keeps me going is I have way much too do and too many to take care of.
Please keep in touch with me. Ok. ;-)

    HI!

I am really saddened to read what you have been dealing with, the pain that you have been enduring, and with no medical care. This is a very sad story. And it is a story that I hear all too often. And it speaks to your inner strength and your love for your family that you have worked so hard to continue your babysitting.

I am so glad to hear that you are on your way to getting connected with health insurance.

And you're right. Don't give up. Stay empowered. Keep moving, one step at a time.

I am also praying that you doctor can get your pain under control.

Please stay in touch with us. Let us know how you're doing!

    Gary

Gary, thank you for your response . Out of all of my problems my pain is the worst to try to control.
One day I was on my pain meds, the next day nothing. It was real hard for me to get used to the fact I had nothing for pain. I was taking pills plus a patch. I've dealt with my pain for well over 10 years. My Dr had even wanted me to have a pump put in. I'm glad I didn't go that far.
I really thought I was going to end up in the hospital to dry out from the serious drugs that I was on for many years.
But luckly that did not have to happen.
But I still have to deal with the pain today. As it does not ever go away. Even when I'm resting I have to keep moving my arms and legs cause they hurt so much.
I finially did get all of the ins cards as of today. So now I can make an appointment to see the Drs that I need to see.

    HI,

I am very sad to hear about what you are going through with your pain. It is clear that you have been on quite a long road with all of this, between the treatment and the pain itself. And I understand your concerns about the side effects of the pain medications.

I am really glad that you are going to be able to get some medical attention. That is such great news.

I hope you will keep in touch with us and let us know how you are doing.

    And have a good weekend,

    Gary

I like the way your standing up and encouraging her in this awful battle she fighting! No Insurance left me looking like a "Drug Seeker" to the medical community & I was exactly that, but not for the reasons they thought…and those side effects~I'm more afraid of two things, one is no pain medicine when you've taken it for years w/ the fear of the pain itself along with going thru withdrawals & 2nd, I'm more afraid of the "Tylenol" than the narcotic itself~that stuff is a liver killer…

iI am sorry to hear about all your pain, and even more sorry that your dr released you from his practice because of no insurance. I do not know what state u are in, but you can go into the state medical pgysician website and write a comment on his insurance practices. Many people will read those comments when choosing a new physician. I am not sating you should get back at him, but a little knowledge for other consumers may go a long way, lol. Certainly do not go back to him/her obvioisly he was morw interested in his pockets then your health, otherwise he would have offered you a payment plan or something like that to help in your time of crisis. I live in an area where unemployment at this time is high, but we do not release our patients because they lose ins or a job, we do our best to recommend hospital assistance programs so they continue to get medical care. We help low income with pay plans, and even write off some balances on our seniors that we know are on fixed incomes. If your old phy did not even recommend a new one for you he is not doing his job correctly. Now with regards to getting the pain relief that you need, many pharmacys (walmarts-kmarts-walgreens, rite-AID) have low cost pharmacy policies where u pay as little as 2.00 for rx's. Also many rx manufactors will give free medications to those that are eligible. You need to get on line and see who makes the rx's u were taking, then contact for the paperwork to fill out. It might be a little time consuming, but it is worth the effort. We have our patient do this all the time. Good luck, and higs for the pain..

This fellow Yooper had been in an opiates based Pain Maintenance Program for years. I have been DX'd as dying from one disease; and medically dependent on drugs (legal) for some pain control. During the Nam War, I was a POW, and having been tortured often I am left with incredible pain. You have my prayers in your battle against pain. Please take care!

You also have my prayers. You guys went threw an awful lot over there.
I finially get to see a Dr on Monday. Don't know how I feel about it though. I haven't seen one in so long. I just hope he believes in everything that I tell him.
Some people just run to the emergeny room all the time. With no medical in. We just couldn't afford me to do such a thing.
Anyways Ty very much. Please keep in touch.

You know I really tried to deal with my Dr. But when I went to see him my cost was so high. He knew we didn't have ins any more but still chose to charge me $180.00 for each Dr visit. I just couldn't afford to go like he wanted me to. I understand that there is stipulations when you are on pain meds. But he wouldn't work with me. What he was charging me, then the cost of my meds was sending us into bankrupsy.
But I don't want to try and push anything because if I make a fuss over what he did I might not be able to get any Dr. Because he's on the local medical board here. I just look at the fact what goes around comes around. He will get his payment someday, and it won't be from me. It will be from the man upstairs.

Dear GMATXIL I've never seen any letter that made the point any better than your's did. Where is this country's collective compassion? Have any of us given any thought to how much money is GIVEN AWAY not only to the third world, but to nations that have never supported us in ANYWAY, not even verbally? We have AMERICAN children that are going to bed BEYOND hungry; they are STARVING. Ask me, should I send $$$ to some foreign agency to feed their kids? I am sorry about my answer, but we CANNOT BE ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE! I have an obligation, if I can, to support American children before those from Angola (while they were killing Americans)

We keep telling the world that we are the richest nation on earth, while our gov't tells us that we are broke (and we are), yet our funds continue to flow overseas.

I don't know what advice to offer GMATXIL! All I can tell him is DON'T move to AZ. IN this state even people receiving Medi-care CANNOT get Medi-caid.
That's right, IN AZ THERE IS NO MEDI-CAID AT ALL!!!!!!!!!! Our Gov. "opt-out" (her exact words) to balance the state's budget. Even those of us that had Medicaid in the past, NOW HAVE NONE! There is no state with more elderly citizens than AZ.

As a taxpayer I am taking my own action, but since that action shouldn't be discussed, no details. They can't kill me. That is still true but they sure found a lot of ways to fore-shorten my (and many of your's) life.
