Degenerative Disc Disease

Hi, I'm new.

I am 41, and my recent MRI found evidence of Degenerative Disc Disease and Facet Arthritis. Back problems run in my family on both sides, so this is not too surprising.

I have had chronic lower back pain for about 11 years now. Started when I worked as an EMT for a very short time…in which I believe I moved wrong and injured my back, which has ultimately led to today.

I am a little nervous about what the future holds for me now. My regular doctor is out, but returning next week, and will most likely refer me to a specialist. I am already receiving acupuncture for temporary pain relief that is not drug related.

Hoping I can join a family here with similar issues, to vent my pain, frustration…and well, aging.

Thank you for listening.

10 years ago I was in a car accident that started my journey of back pain. I was diagnosed with 2 herniated discs ,facet arthritis, spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease. I went through epidural injections that didnt help. I tired PT several times. I ended up having surgery Nov 2016 a microdisectomy and laminectomy. I ended up reherinating my disc and am about to go for 2nd back surgery. I can recommend trying everything you can before surgery. If its avail I have tried it. One thing I have learned is to listen to your body and the pain. I hope you have can find some relief.

Hi tlcowgill, it's really great to meet you. I am glad you found your way to Chronic Pain Connect. Really sorry to hear you have had to deal with so much. I think that moving on to a specialist can potentially be a good thing if it leads to getting more answers and hopefully more pain relief. I have heard good things about acupuncture. Welcome! I hope you will stay connected with us. And let us know how you are doing. You are not alone.

My pain is due to neurological impulses and nerves because of the fibromyalgia but sometimes stuff such as creams and massage help the areas. I think my biggest issue besides the pain is that it's invisible pain and people say i'm to young to hurt or hobble or walk with a cane :(

I've used lidocaine patches as well as creams but they only help for such a short time. I'm curious about the tens units. I've considered ordering those myself

Unfortuately I've got a HUGE sweet tooth! Some of the worst things are refined sugars, artificial sugars and replacement sugars. Dairy products are also high on the list of things that are said to increase natural inflammation in the body :(

I have changed my diet quite a bit. My inflammation is due to arthritis unfortunately :(

I've got Fibromyalgia and 2 compressed fractures in my lower spine. My doctor keeps trying out meds on me but I'm about ready to get rid of them (except the ones for my depression). Some of my friends have been telling me to use essential oils so I'm looking into that as well as dietary changes. Some foods are suppose to help lower inflammation naturally while others are said to increase it.

I have been using Lidocaine patches (over the county) and it's helped some. I just ordered a TENS unit on Amazon, and also considering cannabis CBD patches - I hear they provide a lot of relief as well.

I'm sorry to hear that you're going through so much! I don't have the same problems as you but I can definitely relate to being in pain and frustration! I'd love to be a support buddy

    Hi there,
That would be wonderful. I have been looking up and finding different ways to deal with the pain without medication, but they all have only taken the "edge" off.

    What are you dealing with?
