Oxycodone

Oxycodone is an opioid analgesic medication synthesized from opium-derived thebaine. It was developed in 1916 in Germany, as one of several new semi-synthetic opioids in an attempt to improve on the existing opiates and opioids: morphine, diacetylmorphine (heroin), and codeine.[2]

Currently it is formulated as single ingredient products or compounded products. Some common examples of compounding are oxycodone with acetaminophen or NSAIDs such as ibuprofen. The formulations are available as generics but are also made under various brand names.

Oxycodone , or percocet as i call it. helps me with breakthru pain but mow that i can only get Oxycontin in brand name , does anyone know the eqivalent of 160 mg of oxycontin to a fentanyl patch? i am hoping these are cheaper. patches would help a lot I hope, gosh I cant grow hair on my foot anyway and i think a nice gel-like pressure would hurt too bad. just wondering…mike

I have been prescribed Oxycodone for about 8-10 years; in 5mg, 10mg and 15mg. In the 5 and 10 mg doses the nsaid is included but in the 15 mg dose the nsaid ingredient has been removed. It works well for moderate to severe pain. depending on your pain level it's good for 3-8 hours. It works well with a separate nsaid, (like Celebrex).
Oxycodone also works well for break-through pain if you are also using a longer acting delivery system for pain; for example with a pain pump or fentanyl patches. I have used it with the patches and a close friend has used it with a pain pump.
As with all other opiate pain medications that I have used there are possible side effects, two of them occur in most patients. The 1st of these is constipation. Some people can control this with diet, for others fiber therapy, stool softeners and even laxatives may be necessary. The 2nd common side effect is the need for stronger medications as your body seems to build up a resistance. The amount of time it takes seems to be different every time. I have always used the least amount of medication I could stand and have never had any problem with addiction to any of them.

I got off of it when I got kicked off of Medicaid and would not go to a dr. who acted like I was an addict. It was get off or do Pain management , and I think they pretty well do the same thing!! I have not had any problems being off of it, so happy about that. Actually, I am off all prescription pain meds, just using Ibuprophen.

I've been on generic oxycodone for about 10 yrs but recently was told that the generic was no longer available in the long acting form. The IR or immediate release is still available which I take for break-through pain, but the controlled release is only available as Oxycontin the brand name. It was not easy, but my doctor was able to get my insurance to add the brand name to their formulary for me. It cost me $80 a month and my plans are to stop taking it at one point. I've had 5 spinal surgeries, all failures so I'm in a lot of pain, but I think the effects of being on narcotics for so many years is worse on my body than me trying to overcome the constant pain. Right now I'm having heart problems so I'm not able to stop the medication, but when the time comes, I know its not going to be easy…but I will be able to stop it with help.

I had some relief, but it was minimal and not worth taking this type of drug for so little return. Each medicine works differently for each individual though.

Pros

Very powerful. Definitely strong enough to cover the pain.

Cons

The side-effects were awful. dizziness, nausea, and addiction.
